The FAQ's Of Water
What is water purification?
Water purification generally means freeing water from any kind of impurity it
contains, such as contaminants or micro organisms. Water purification is not a
very one-sided process; the purification process contains many steps. The steps
that need to be progressed depend on the kind of impurities that are found in
the water. This can differ very much for different types of water.
What is "hard" water?
Hard water is water which has been exposed to rock containing calcium,
magnesium or a combination of both. These minerals dissolve into the water over
time which is then referred to as hardness. Hardness causes lime or scale
buildup on plumbing fixtures and appliances and reduces the cleaning ability of
soaps and detergents. Hard water is expressed in grains of hardness per gallon
of water.
How does a water softener remove "hardness: from water?
Water softeners work on the principle of "ion exchange". "Ions" are
electrically charged atoms or groups of atoms. Tiny beads of plastic (called resin) inside a water softener mineral tank are surrounded by ions of sodium or potassium which have a weak magnetic attraction to the resin. Calcium and/or magnesium ions (hardness) have a stronger magnetic attraction to the resin than the sodium or potassium. When these hardness ions pass near the resin, they are attracted to it so strongly as to knock the ions of sodium or potassium off the resin bead and take its place. Therefore, one ion is exchanged for another in the water.
How effective is Reverse Osmosis filtration compared to other methods ?
Reverse
Osmosis is the most convenient and effective method of water filtration. It
filters water by squeezing water through a semi-permeable membrane, which is
rated at 0.0001 micron (equals to 0.00000004 inch!). This is the technology used
to make bottled water, it is also the only technology capable of desalinating
sea water, making it into drinking water.
Non-RO water filters are much less effective, and the pore size on these filter
media are much bigger, generally 0.5 - 10 micron. They can filter out coarse
particles, sediments and elements only up to their micron rating. Anything finer
and most dissolved substances cannot be filtered out. As a result, water is far
less clean and safe compare to reverse osmosis filtration
